“the show mesmerises adults and children alike”

Tucked away on an unassuming side street in Islington is the Little Angel Theatre. Currently playing host to Book Story by Monstro Theatre for a short run until 1st October before embarking on a tour of the South until Saturday 4th November.

Book Story is set in Brian’s Library, a library like no other where magic happens and as soon as the lights go out the books spring to life. Ben Glasstone’s clever writing tells a bittersweet tale which illustrates why books still have a place in this digital world.

Using a combination of puppetry, song and subtle humour the show appeals to, and mesmerises adults and children alike. I watched alongside a school party of thirty 7 year olds. The whole group were engaged for the entire performance.

Phil Yarrow plays Brian well portraying a loveable lead with a sensitive soul. Andrea Sadler and Karina Garnett bring unique personalities to the puppet books as they spring to life on the shelves.

The puppetry by Michael Fowkes is simple but effective. The children were particularly delighted when they got close up and visited the audience.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable hour of feel good theatre which reignites a love of books. You leave wondering what happens on your bookshelves when you turn off the lights!
