it is more important than ever that the LGBT+ community remembers the Stonewall titans who paved the way for gay rights

On June 28, 1969, a series of violent demonstrations erupted at the popular gay bar the Stonewall Inn in New York City after a police raid got out of hand. Police raids were frequent at gay bars at the time and any man or woman deemed to be engaging in homosexual behaviour would be arrested. The Stonewall Riots are considered by many to be the catalyst for the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT+ rights in the United States.

In h Club’s the Oak Room, Matthew Todd, editor of the UK gay magazine Attitude between 2008 and 2016, chaired a panel discussion about the myriad of challenges still facing the LGBT+ community 50 years after Stonewall.

The panel consisted of Hannah and Jake Graf, Brian Paddick and Dr Nneka Nwokolo. Each speaker began by talking about their history and involvement in the LGBT+ community. Hannah and Jake Graf are both transgender and made headlines across the country when they married in 2018. Jake is a writer and director specialising in short films dealing with transgender issues and Hannah was the highest-ranking transgender officer in the British Army until she left the forces a few years ago.

Brian Paddick sits in the House of Lords and was, until his retirement in 2007, the UK’s most senior openly gay police officer. Dr Nneka Nwokolo is a consultant physician in HIV and Sexual Health and has been working with HIV+ patients since the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.

The speakers were very impressive. It was especially nice to see transgender representation as LGBT+ spaces are often dominated by cis gay men. Nwokolo’s experience working with HIV+ patients before effective treatment was available was incredibly moving as she recounted how when she went home in the evening, she never knew which of her patients would be alive the next day.

The panel went on to discuss the commercialism of pride. Corporate brands have been accused of ‘jumping on the LGBT+ bandwagon’ during pride month. The panel argued however that this criticism comes from a place of privilege, that is, from those who live in big metropolitan cities. Todd talked about the impact that seeing something like a rainbow Starbucks cup can have on an individual living in a conservative area. Hannah Graf noted as well that corporation sponsorship of pride gives LGBT+ individuals some leverage if they were to face discrimination by one of these companies.

The discussion and tone were very conversational. The event could have been improved by an opportunity to ask questions, but the speakers hung around afterwards, so audience members were able to continue the discussion if they wanted.

Undoubtedly, a lot has changed in the last half-century, but the battle of LGBT+ equality is far from over. With increasing infighting amongst the LGBT+ community and growing reports of homophobic and transphobic hate crimes, it is more important than ever that the LGBT+ community remembers the Stonewall titans who paved the way for gay rights.

“Cola Phalquero was a wonderful model and indulged the class with many different poses and outfits”

In celebration of LGBT+ pride, private members club The Hospital (h) Club London and East London Life Drawing collaborated on a special life drawing class with drag artist and self-proclaimed ‘London’s sexiest cockroach’ Cola Phalquero modelling. The event ran for two hours and East London Life Drawing generously provided all materials from a rainbow spectrum of oil pastels to animal print erasers. There were a variety of mediums available and much of the class brought along their own art supplies as well. This was a class where artistic expression is encouraged.

h Club kindly offered a complimentary cocktail to each attendee and after a rundown of the session plan, drawing commenced with the class sat in a circle around Phalquero. The first-floor studio in h Club was well-lit and music played softly in the background which facilitated a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

The event began with a set of three one-minute sketches to warm up. Then the class progressed onto a six-, twelve- and fifteen-minute sketch respectively. After a short break, drawing began again with another set of three one-minute sketches, this time in pen and overlapping. Then another two fifteen-minute sketches before a twenty-minute pose to end. The final pose was perhaps Phalquero’s most dynamic as she lay on the ground, legs-a-spread, clutching a plastic skull.

The session was hosted by Edmund Farmer from East London Life Drawing. Farmer was engaging, attentive and encouraging, and was sure to check that the class were getting the visual variety that they desired. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and Farmer happy to help.

Cola Phalquero was a wonderful model and indulged the class with many different poses and outfits. Originally posing in a ragged dress made from a fluorescent orange hi-viz jacket and a neon hat with a tassel fringe that looked decidedly Queen Nefertiti-esque, Phalquero soon shed these to reveal a strapless dress and, under that, a sort-of black harness that wrapped around her legs. All while in black and white chequered heels!

Phalquero’s vibrant green eyeshadow and huge fake eyelashes also provided an excellent visual stimulus and inspired a lot of colour play amongst the class. It was refreshing to see colour being so readily embraced in an exercise that is often focused on pencil work. The contrast between the gaudy attire and make-up of Phalquero and her naked flesh was greatly exciting to bring to life on paper.

The session ended with a display of everyone’s artwork. This was a bit nerve-wracking, but everyone was very interested to see how everyone had engaged with such a unique model. Farmer made sure to take a picture of everyone’s two favourite works to share on social media, and it was nice that everyone was included in this no matter their skill level.

This was an art class like no other that offered a dynamic and refreshing take on life drawing. I will certainly be checking out events with East London Life Drawing and h Club in the future!
